The new Whataburger restaurant aimed at serving the local community in Knoxville.
Whataburger is set to open three new restaurant locations in Knoxville, Tennessee, including sites in Powell, Cumberland Avenue, and Turkey Creek. The expansion aims to fulfill the demand from local residents for the popular Texan fast-food choice. The Turkey Creek location is currently under construction, while the Powell and Cumberland sites are being redesigned to enhance customer experience. This growth reflects Whataburger’s strategy to increase its presence outside Texas, with 23 existing locations in Tennessee serving to showcase their expanding footprint.
Whataburger, a popular Texas-based burger chain, is set to open three new restaurant locations in Knoxville, Tennessee. This expansion will bring the much-anticipated fast-food option closer to local residents craving its signature flavors.
The new Whataburger locations will be strategically placed in three areas around Knoxville: Powell, the Strip, and Turkey Creek. Progress on the Turkey Creek site is well underway, with construction having started as of July 18, 2024. This facility will be located at 310 Wild Geese Road, taking over a former Steak n’ Shake restaurant. The new Whataburger in this area will include a drive-thru to enhance customer convenience.
The Powell location is set to open at 500 Emory Road, which also was previously a Steak n’ Shake. Plans for this site include a complete remodel and the addition of a two-lane drive-through, ensuring a smooth service even during peak hours.
The third location is located on Cumberland Avenue at 1830 Cumberland Avenue, a spot situated beneath student apartment complexes and conveniently close to an existing Raising Cane’s. This facility will be designed exclusively for dine-in customers. Bidding for the Cumberland Avenue location closed on March 20, 2024, while the Emory Road location’s bidding concluded later on May 21, 2024.
Planning for both the Cumberland Avenue and Emory Road restaurants commenced in October 2024, demonstrating a well-thought-out approach to meet local demand. As one of the most-requested fast-food brands in the area, Whataburger has shown it pays attention to its customer base. The franchisee responsible for these Knoxville locations is MWB Restaurants, which is not only working on these sites but is also exploring additional locations in Chattanooga and three other spots across Alabama, specifically in Golden, Jasper, and Owens Cross Roads.
Tennessee currently boasts a total of 23 Whataburger restaurants, with five located in Clarksville, six around Memphis, and 12 in Nashville. This growth reflects Whataburger’s expanding presence beyond its home state of Texas, where the company is headquartered in San Antonio. The burger chain operates over 1,000 locations across 16 states, establishing itself as a beloved fast-food choice for many.
Residents of Knoxville have expressed a strong desire for Whataburger through various channels, corroborated by Knox News readers making it a top-requested restaurant brand in 2024. As of now, the closest Whataburger remains a considerable distance away, located in Hermitage, approximately 169 miles from Knoxville. The impending openings in Knoxville promise to satisfy local cravings and bridge the gap for Whataburger enthusiasts in the region.
