Victor Hernandez has been promoted to assistant project manager for Skanska on the $9.5 billion Westside Purple Line Extension in Los Angeles. With over a decade of experience, Hernandez began his career in Skanska’s training program and has since contributed significantly to the D Line project, overseeing construction of underground stations and emphasizing the importance of hands-on learning. His expertise in complex construction challenges positions him as a vital asset in advancing Los Angeles’ transit framework.
Victor Hernandez has taken on a new role as assistant project manager for Skanska on the transformative $9.5 billion Westside Purple Line Extension, recently renamed the D Line in Los Angeles. This ambitious undertaking is a joint effort involving Skanska, Shea, and Traylor Brothers. Hernandez’s ascent in the construction industry highlights his over a decade of relevant experience and technical expertise.
Hernandez began his career through Skanska’s Core Competency Training Program, introducing him to various facets of civil construction. With a civil engineering degree earned from the University of California-Irvine, he initially worked as a field engineer. As his skills sharpened and his knowledge deepened, he transitioned to project engineer, finally landing in his current position as assistant project manager.
Currently, Hernandez is instrumental in overseeing construction operations for multiple underground stations on the D Line, including Fairfax, La Brea, and La Cienega. This line is notable for being one of Los Angeles’ most geologically complex transit projects, and the challenges it presents require a deep understanding of construction and project management.
Hernandez possesses a robust technical background, particularly in dealing with deep excavations, shoring systems, heavy concrete construction, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. His responsibilities also extend to systems build-out, architectural finishes, and civil restoration. His past experience at the estimating office for the L.A. Metro Regional Connector and the Purple Line further honed his insight into essential project components.
Hernandez’s career trajectory has been shaped significantly by hands-on experience. His time as a field engineer offered him practical exposure while overseeing the construction of three stations. He faced distinct challenges, notably at Fairfax Station, where the soil was heavily impacted by tar, often leaving a memorable scent filling the air as he returned to the office. Along the way, Hernandez has developed vital relationships with team members from Traylor Brothers and Shea, emphasizing the cooperative spirit in large-scale projects.
In addition to his role on the D Line, Hernandez is also focusing on the LAX people mover project, which is currently in preconstruction and expected to unfold over the next five years. His ongoing involvement in such projects underscores the necessity of continuous learning and hands-on experience, elements Hernandez deems crucial for career development.
For young engineers aiming to carve their path in the industry, Hernandez stresses the value of connecting with seasoned professionals. Engaging with the older generation allows for learning from their wealth of experience, guiding newcomers through the complex realities of construction. Despite the demanding nature of his work, Hernandez describes his role as rewarding, a sentiment that reflects a broader truth in the construction industry.
Victor Hernandez’s journey from a graduate to an assistant project manager is a testament to hard work, resilience, and continuous growth in the diversified field of civil construction. As the Westside Purple Line Extension moves forward, Hernandez’s contributions and insights will undoubtedly play a crucial role in enhancing Los Angeles’ transportation framework.
