Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute Opens New Facility in Gainesville

The Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute has launched a new and improved rehabilitation hospital in Gainesville, Georgia. This modern facility spans 62,000 square feet and features 40 beds to better serve patients in the region. The completion of this significant project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a key milestone for health services in the area.

The construction of the hospital began in March 2024, born from a collaborative effort between the Northeast Georgia Health System and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a division of Lifepoint Health. This state-of-the-art facility aims to provide comprehensive rehabilitation care, equipped with advanced therapeutic resources that promote effective patient recovery.

Facility Features and Patient Amenities

Designed with patient needs in mind, the new rehabilitation hospital offers a wide array of essential amenities and services. The first floor houses a therapeutic gym, patient day rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area, and specially designed mock spaces such as a bedroom and kitchen for life skills training. Meanwhile, the second floor is dedicated to therapy rooms, with 12 patient beds and specialized areas catering to brain injury patients.

Outdoor activities are also featured prominently at the facility, with a recreation courtyard that includes putting greens, bocce ball courts, and basketball courts. These options provide essential therapeutic benefits and promote a well-rounded recovery process.

Increased Capacity and Enhanced Services

This new facility nearly doubles the patient capacity from the previous 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. With all rehabilitation services previously offered at the medical center now transitioning to this new location, the institute is poised to address a broader range of complex medical needs, effectively catering to patients at every stage of recovery.

Advanced technologies are being utilized within the center to enhance patient care. Innovations such as robotics, virtual reality platforms for neurorehabilitation, and specialized therapy zones are incorporated to aid in recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

Construction and Design Innovations

The construction of the facility was managed by Hoar Construction, which faced challenges due to weather-related setbacks, including multiple hurricanes. To ensure a smooth construction process, efforts were made to prevent disruptions to neighboring businesses. Temporary power solutions were implemented to adhere to the project schedule despite the adverse effects of the weather.

Utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), the construction team effectively managed the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing aspects of the project. Additionally, prefabrication of patient room headwall units was successfully conducted on-site, resulting in notable time and cost savings for the project.

The architectural design for the facility was spearheaded by Earl Swensson Associates, Inc., while Lawson Mechanical was responsible for the HVAC installations. Other key partners included AAA Commercial Flooring, Ryals Brothers for paving, Cole Masonry, and Enfinity Engineering as the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineer.

Management and Future Plans

Day-to-day operations of the facility will be overseen by Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a joint venture with the Northeast Georgia Health System. This new rehabilitation hospital is part of Lifepoint’s broader network, which includes over 45 inpatient rehabilitation centers across the United States. The Northeast Georgia Rehabilitation Institute is now better equipped to provide specialized care and along the way, it represents a significant advancement for health services in the region.
