Ongoing road construction and urban development in Moorhead.
Moorhead is set for significant road construction and urban development. Upcoming projects include the 11th Street Underpass and enhancements to I-94 and the Red River Bridge. Residents are advised to prepare for traffic disruptions while the old Moorhead Center Mall will be demolished for new developments. Public safety and emergency response improvements are also on the agenda as the city looks to revitalize the downtown area. MnDOT emphasizes safety as Minnesota’s 2025 construction season plans nearly 180 road and bridge projects state-wide.
The city of Moorhead is bracing for significant road construction projects and urban development slated for the upcoming years, as local officials and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) held an open house to inform residents about upcoming changes. With a robust agenda for 2025, the city is advising residents to prepare for potential traffic disruptions and detours that are likely to challenge daily commutes.
This year’s construction efforts are anticipated to create traffic issues, so residents are encouraged to plan their routes ahead of time. One major undertaking is the ongoing construction of the 11th Street Underpass, which is part of a larger project costing nearly $115 million. This underpass aims to resolve issues stemming from heavy train traffic, which has been affecting local traffic flow in the area.
With weather conditions improving, full operational work on the underpass is set to resume after a period of work that took place during winter. Many of the challenges caused by this project will likely last until its completion, but the benefits of addressing train-related traffic problems are projected to be substantial.
In addition to the underpass project, MnDOT is set to upgrade sections of I-94 and undertake a resurfacing project on the Red River Bridge, with an expected cost of about $3 million. Fortunately, the traffic impacts from the I-94 upgrade will be limited, as most of the work is planned to occur at night. These enhancements aim to improve road infrastructure and functionality, reducing future maintenance needs.
Another critical development on the horizon involves the demolition of the old Moorhead Center Mall, which will soon be underway. This move is expected to pave the way for new commercial and residential developments, bringing life to the downtown area. The mall reconstruction is projected to take approximately 1.5 to 2 years to complete, with the existing parking deck next to the former Herberger’s store expected to remain intact as part of the new construction.
The work being done on the underpass and the new downtown developments are anticipated to enhance emergency response times for the nearby fire station. As these projects take shape, the overarching goal is to create a vibrant and bustling downtown area, which will benefit both residents and visitors alike.
Starting June 2, significant road changes will impact Main Avenue in Downtown Moorhead, which will close from 10th to 12th Streets. In conjunction with this, First Avenue between 8th and 12th Streets will also be closed, leading to an uptick in vehicle traffic on Center Avenue. During this construction period, train horns will resume in the downtown quiet zone from 6 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday, as temporary measures to ensure public safety.
Looking beyond Moorhead, it is important to note that Minnesota’s 2025 construction season includes nearly 180 planned road and bridge projects aimed at bolstering roads, bridges, and overall transportation infrastructure across the state. Noteworthy projects being led by MnDOT include the reconstruction of Highway 371 in Northern Minnesota and various bridge repairs in the Twin Cities metro area. As construction amplifies statewide, MnDOT stresses the importance of safety in work zones.
The ambitious construction and renovation efforts set for Moorhead and beyond reflect a broader commitment to enhancing safety, mobility, and employment opportunities throughout Minnesota. Residents are urged to stay informed and proactive as these transformative projects unfold.
