Attendees engage with companies at the Construction Trade Career Fair aimed at bridging the skilled labor gap.
The inaugural Construction Trade Career Fair at Pensacola State College aims to address the skilled worker shortage in the local construction industry. With nearly 2,800 jobs currently available, 15 companies will participate to attract talent, enhancing their workforce and addressing the skills gap. Local educational institutions are also preparing the next generation for construction roles through resources and training programs. The event represents a significant step towards a robust and skilled construction workforce to meet industry demands.
The inaugural Construction Trade Career Fair is scheduled to take place at Pensacola State College (PSC) on July 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., aimed at tackling the growing need for skilled workers in the local construction industry. As seasoned professionals age out, move into management roles, or transition to different careers, the demand for skilled labor in the Pensacola metropolitan area has soared.
With nearly 2,800 construction-related jobs currently available in the Pensacola area and around 25 new job postings each month, local organizations and companies are taking proactive measures to create pathways for job seekers to enter the construction field.
The career fair will welcome both students and the general public, with an impressive lineup of 15 companies showcasing their available positions to attract new talent. Notable participants include American Magic, ST Engineering, and Comfort Systems USA. These companies aim to not only fill job vacancies but also enhance their overall workforce.
As part of a broader initiative, local schools, from K-12 to institutions of higher education, are actively preparing the next generation for roles in the construction industry. By providing access to resources and programs focused on construction skills training, these educational institutions play a crucial role in diminishing the skills gap.
The average median salary for construction positions in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties is approximately $41,215 annually, with opportunities for higher earnings as individuals gain experience or specialize in particular areas. For instance, the demand for construction managers is significant, with an average of 16 job postings and 21 hires per month from July 2024 to June 2025. Moreover, the labor force for construction laborers sees about 9 job postings and 148 hires monthly.
Within the local construction landscape, residential construction comprises roughly 18.3% of jobs, while specialty trade contractors and foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors account for 16.9% and 11% of the workforce, respectively. The figures indicate a robust construction sector ready for new entrants.
Job seekers are encouraged to take proactive steps, such as applying in person even if there are no visible job listings online. Organizations like Comfort Systems USA, which have been instrumental in major projects in the area, are planning further expansions with the establishment of a new fabrication shop and office in Pace, Florida. They prioritize a coachable attitude in candidates and provide in-house apprenticeship programs to help new hires develop valuable skills.
The recently released data by the Haas Center has identified critical skills required in the construction industry, categorizing them into three groups: necessary, defining, and distinguishing skills. Necessary skills are fundamental abilities applicable across various construction roles. Defining skills pertain to routine responsibilities essential for daily job functions, while distinguishing skills are specialized talents that can lead to greater salary potential and differentiating factors among candidates.
Skills such as construction management and project closure are expected to enhance salary potential, whereas skills in residential construction and demolition may see declines in growth opportunities. The concerted efforts by local industry players to attract newcomers aim to bridge gaps in the construction workforce and foster growth within the sector.
The upcoming Construction Trade Career Fair stands as a significant step toward ensuring a robust, skilled workforce prepared to meet the demands of a thriving industry.
