News Summary

Florida has announced a major investment of $340 million to expand Interstate 275 in Pinellas County. This project, part of the $7-billion Moving Florida Forward program, aims to improve traffic flow and economic growth. The expansion will add two tolled lanes each way over 7.5 miles and reconstruct four interchanges. It promises significant economic benefits and aims to drastically reduce travel delays, enhancing reliability for commuters and freight. Completion is expected by late 2030, marking a generational investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Florida Invests $340 Million in I-275 Express Lane Expansion to Improve Traffic Conditions

Florida has officially launched a significant transportation project, committing $340 million to widen Interstate 275 in Pinellas County. This expansion forms a crucial part of the state’s larger $7-billion Moving Florida Forward program, aimed at enhancing traffic flow and bolstering economic growth throughout the region.

Project Announcement and Background

The announcement regarding this major infrastructure development was made on August 26 at Tampa International Airport. This undertaking succeeds the recently completed Howard Frankland Bridge replacement, a project that has already improved the flow of traffic in the Tampa area.

Details of the I-275 Expansion

The I-275 expansion will introduce two additional tolled lanes in each direction over a span of 7.5 miles north of downtown Tampa. Tampa-based Prince Contracting LLC has been awarded the contract under a traditional design-bid-build model. In addition to the lane additions, the project includes the reconstruction of four interchanges at key locations, namely 38th Avenue N, 54th Avenue N, Gandy Boulevard, and Roosevelt Boulevard.

As part of the enhancements, the expansion will modify a total of 14 bridges along the route and construct noise barriers to mitigate sound pollution. Furthermore, a continuous shared-use path will be developed along Ulmerton Road, linking to the new pedestrian and cycling facility at Howard Frankland.

Timeline and Economic Impact

The express lane expansion is set to be completed in phases, with a full rollout expected by late 2030. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) estimates that these improvements will result in $1.42 billion in regional economic benefits, a figure that underscores the project’s potential to contribute to local economies.

One of the primary goals of the expansion is to significantly reduce travel delays by up to 85%. This improvement is anticipated to facilitate much shorter commutes for residents, while also enhancing freight reliability for the Port of Tampa and the I-4 corridor.

Ensuring Safety and Reliability

The upgrades will also ensure that I-275 remains a reliable evacuation route during hurricanes, a vital consideration given Florida’s susceptibility to extreme weather events. The importance of this project cannot be overstated as it is a part of a broader initiative to modernize aging infrastructure in Florida.

Howard Frankland Bridge Background

The recent replacement of the Howard Frankland Bridge, which cost $973 million, was a landmark project that added four general-purpose lanes and four tolled express lanes. A 12-foot-wide separated shared-use path was also included in the design to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. The ongoing demolition of the old 1960s northbound bridge span is expected to complete by 2026.

Funding and Future Projects

The Moving Florida Forward program, which commenced in 2023, combines $4 billion in general revenue funding to expedite over 20 major highway and bridge projects statewide. This proactive approach aims to accelerate critical infrastructure improvements—advancing priority projects by as much as 15 years earlier than previously planned.

As the project progresses, it is clear that the I-275 expansion represents a generational investment in Florida’s transportation infrastructure, setting the stage for enhanced mobility and economic vitality for years to come.
