Spanning a generous 35,500 square feet, the Grimes Engineering Center is built atop the Kresge Engineering Library, which is over 45 years old. The library itself had experienced shifting of up to eight inches over the years, posing a significant challenge for engineers and builders. The construction, carried out by XL Construction based in Milpitas, California, required meticulous planning to ensure the new facility maintained the structural integrity of the existing library while accommodating its altered position.

Innovative Building Techniques

One of the most remarkable aspects of this project was its utilization of a 275-ton crane, which played a vital role in the construction process. The building was constructed around this crane, demonstrating advanced engineering techniques. Additionally, the center features shape memory alloy (SMA) structural cables for the first time. These cables are specifically designed to absorb energy during seismic events and return to their original position afterward, enhancing overall building resilience.

Expertise in Structural Integration

The integration of a modern building with a concrete structure dating back to 1979 posed unique challenges. The construction team had to align the new structure with the existing library despite an alignment shift of up to eight inches. To successfully navigate these complexities, extensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination was essential. This technology enabled the precise integration of all building components, ensuring that the structural integrity remained intact.

The construction of the Grimes Engineering Center has not only focused on modern innovations but also on preserving historical architecture. The Kresge Engineering Library was carefully maintained throughout the construction process, emphasizing a commitment to the institution’s rich heritage.
